After many virtual meetings during the application phase as well as at the beginning of the project, all project partners of the BITS project finally met in person for the kick-off on 12 October in Hannover at the TIB.
Here we discussed various aspects, starting with terminology clarifications. TIB presented the Terminology Service (TS) in the existing facets NFDI4Ing and NFDI4Chem, which is now being created in the project for Earth System Sciences (ESS) and also implemented in the repositories of the project participants. A collection of ESS terminologies has already been implemented in the TIB TS and the first terminologies have been integrated into it. The differences and similarities between the data and metadata in the repositories at DKRZ and SGN were also highlighted. It was considered where the TS for ESS can be used to enrich the metadata and for a more user-friendly search.
On the way to an ESS TS, the next step will be for the partners DKRZ and SGN to collect the terminologies relevant in the respective subject areas. At the same time, requests for new terminologies from other ESS disciplines will be collected, thus also involving the ESS community in the development process. A survey will be conducted on how many terminologies have updates that are not backward compatible and how often they have changes in their semantics.
In the coming weeks, we will keep you informed about the ongoing work here on the project website, which is being created and hosted by the TIB, and we look forward to presenting the first results.
