In our session, we will share key insights from our research on barriers to OA publishing. The presentation will highlight synthesized findings from ten in-depth qualitative interviews with weakly-affiliated researchers, including independent scholars, refugee scientists, citizen scientists, retired researchers and those conducting research for civil society organizations. These interviews, complemented by data from a global quantitative survey, shed light on the specific challenges these researchers face when attempting to disseminate their work via open access channels.
In addition, we will present findings from qualitative interviews with academic publishers and journal editors. These insights reveal the level of awareness within the publishing community regarding structural barriers in OA publishing, as well as the concrete initiatives and strategies being employed to foster inclusion, equity, and a more diverse authorship landscape.
