The large-format, pen-and-ink drawn and watercoloured record sheet with a longitudinal section through the new building of St. Peter's Basilica, begun in 1506, in Michelangelo's revised plans, was created in the 18th century. Most probably the copper engraving by the publisher Antonio Lafreri, published around 1570, served as a template. The drawing was probably produced as a presentation sheet within the training of architects and artists and shows the high esteem in which Michelangelo's planning design was held in the 18th century.
